Fabulous Places and Fauna: Wimmera Bush Blitz by Dr Joanna Sumner, Museums Victoria
Dr Joanna Sumner is Manager of Genetic Resources at Museums Victoria and will be speaking about the outcomes of recent Bush Blitz and Bio Scan projects in East Gippsland and the Grampians as well as the proposed Little Desert Bush Blitz in late October this year. Jo will also provide some background on a bigger research project proposal looking at fire regimes and the impact on biodiversity.
In partnership with Urimbirra and Parks Victoria, Museums Victoria, were successful in getting Federal funding to undertake a two-week intensive Bush Blitz on our blocks in late October and early November. It has been 20 years since Urimbirra undertook a comprehensive flora and fauna survey as part of placing a conservation covenant on the land with the Trust for Nature.
To add value to the Bush Blitz and ensure a more detailed survey, Museums Victoria and Urimbirra, have submitted a grant application to the Ian Potter Environment and Conservation Fund for a three-year project, “Impacts of fire on reptiles and invertebrates in the Little Desert: developing evidence-based management strategies.”
The proposed research project will not only benefit our understanding of the reptile and invertebrate populations on our land as well as the impact of different fire regimes, but also strengthen our land management practices. We also anticipate that the project will strengthen our conservation partnerships and the role of science in the region.
