APS Cardinia Region November Meeting Topic – How Nature Has Shaped the CBD and Greater Melbourne

Topic Details:

Dr Gary Presland is joining APS Cardinia Region for the second time to provide insight into:
• Why the CBD was put into the location it resides
• Why Greater Melbourne spread in the lopsided way that it has
• Why the freeways are placed where they are
• Why some of the buildings were constructed the way that they have
• Why the Yarra River is about two kilometres shorter now than at European settlement
• The Ecological Vegetation Classes (EVCs)

Speaker Information:

Dr Gary Presland is an archaeologist, historian and writer, with interests in both pre-contact First Nations history and natural history, in the Melbourne area. He is the author of several published books on these subjects, including First People: The Eastern Kulin of Melbourne, Port Phillip and Central Victoria, and The Place For A Village: How Nature Has Shaped The City Of Melbourne.
Gary is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, and an Honorary Associate of Museum Victoria.
